Stop 24: Plainview School/Sandy Sanders WMA

Directions: From Jay Buckle Springs, continue north 8 miles, and turn left/west. The Plainview school building is approximately 1 mile ahead on the right. Continue 4 miles, veer south 2 ½ miles to reach the Sandy Sanders WMA entrance to.

From Granite: Go west on Highway 9 for 6 miles. Turn north on Highway 34 and go approximately 3 miles. Then turn west and go for approximately 11 miles. Next, turn north, go 5 miles, then west just over 1 mile and you will see the old Plainview school on the right.

The old Plainview School is on private land, but can be birded from the road. Great Horned Owls and Barn Owls occur here, and the adjacent fields are hunting grounds for Red-tailed Hawks, Mississippi Kites, and Swainson's Hawks. Barn Swallows are ubiquitous here as well. Carolina Chickadees, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers also abound.

In spring the roadsides are strewn with gaillardia and numerous other varieties of wildflowers. Blooming yucca in May makes for particularly attractive photos.

The Plainview School road bears to the left and into Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area. Click here to view information about Sandy Sanders located elsewhere on this site.
